When it comes to ALT+TAB preview I like the classic XP style. It shows the application icons, plain and simple and great for my workflow. Windows 7 instead shows low res thumbnails of the running applications that all look too much the same, and flashes the applications around in the background like a bunch of popup advertising…
Anyway good-ol-classic it is still there with a little help from the second ALT key:
ALT + (tap the other ALT key) + TAB
That is; while holding down the first ALT key, tap and release the second ALT key, then tap the TAB key as usual to scroll.
Anyone know a setting to make it default?
Update: see comments below for a Registry key setting to make this default.
Create a DWORD called "AltTabSettings" in \HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer and set it to 1. This will get you back your beloved classic (and super zippy) Windows XP AltTab.
ReplyDeleteThanks barbudo, that worked a treat!
ReplyDeleteIf you enable the basic theme (disable Aero glass), the ALT+TAB looks like the classic, but also allows mouse interaction (click icons with the mouse while holding alt+tab.) Using the registry change does not allow the mouse interaction.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! That was incredibly helpful!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot, barbudo, worked like a charm :)
ReplyDeletehi, i accidentally switched my default to the classic (i have no idea how i did this...) and want to switch back to the aero theme. do u know how to do that?
ReplyDeletethanks
Thank you very very much! Regedit for the win!
ReplyDeleteAWESOME. THANK YOU. I'M SO RELIEVED!
ReplyDeleteThank you. This has restored my sanity.
ReplyDeletesuper.. I am pretty much relieved now. thanks a lot.
ReplyDelete@barbudo Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou.
ReplyDeleteIt always astounds me how small changes in an OS can be so annoying. The way Aero flashes the window outlines during alt-tabbing made me feel like I was about to suffer an induced seizure.
Very nice! I was annoyed by new alt+tab, finally can switch applications fast again.
ReplyDeleteI hope some day software houses stop playing with our nerves by adding features nobody ever wanted that are jumping around the UI like crazy.
Fast solution: save text below to file with name "Alttab.reg" and double click it:
ReplyDeleteWindows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
"AltTabSettings"=dword:00000001
Fantastic, thank you!
ReplyDeleteThank you, usable function is back finally!
ReplyDeleteHi.
ReplyDeleteHow do I reverse this:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
"AltTabSettings"=dword:00000001
Cant seem to find it in the regedit.
Peter
